Defining ‘Photo Realism’

In order to achieve photo realism, the physics of light and how it acts on surfaces need to be understood and appreciated. After all, what we actually see is a focussed collection of photons on the retina. The data forms electrical impulses through the optic nerve, which are interpreted as an image by the brain. An understanding of how this happens forms the basis of the theory behind photo realistic CGI rendering.

Where many studios will make use of the shortcuts offered by the software they use, the results are acceptable but not as good as a photograph. At Redhound Studios our rendering artists have a background in photography, and engage in producing lighting and camera settings in the traditional way. This produces much better results for studio lighting, creating multiple light sources, reflectors and diffusers exactly as a real studio would, and ensuring realistic lighting and shadows.

Camera settings are similarly dealt with using traditional aperture, focus, exposure and depth of field settings. These emulate real lens types right down to the level of distortion and anomalies created naturally by them, all adding to the illusion of a real world photo shoot.

Finally, and most importantly, the surface finishes of the model are created using the latest techniques. These emulate real world physics, and are subtly refined to accurately represent light reflection, absorption, diffusion, texture, colour and a host of other real world physical aspects that affect the realism of an image.

There are many other techniques we use, which remain trade secrets. However, once the fundamentals of lighting physics are understood the process mixes digital experience and physical science with artistic talent.

Using these techniques, we can achieve results that require little photo retouching and which can be used as product advertising images. These factors are especially important when showing a product in its functional environment, which can be the key to selling it as a concept. Our clients not only demand cost-effective, high quality imagery but also the reliability and integrity of a professional and experienced company.
